A Story of Broken Dreams…and TOES!

A bit melodramatic on the title, I know, but what can you do?

I promised to post up details of my injury, so here’s the nitty gritty:

Sunday Aug. 14 I kicked a tricycle, hard, and in the process I broke my big toe and can no longer run. Undisplaced fracture of the Distal Phalanx (that’s probably a mis-quote on my part) is the official diagnosis, but the doctor was nice enough to dumb it down for me and let me know that my big piggy was busted.

Was it a stupid thing to do?  OF COURSE!
Should I have done it?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Do I regret it?   OF COURSE!
Will I do it again?  …probably not…
Have I completely buggered my fall racing plans?  OF COURSE!
Am I surprised?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!

As a public service announcement, I’d like to advise you all “Breaking your big toe 6 weeks out from your first 50km trail race is a BAD idea”.

My Dr. assured me that I’d be lucky to run part of the Run For the Toad 50km at all, let alone the full 50km, and that I should “consider” adjusting my plans.  She also threatened to beat me about the head and shoulders with a 2×4 if I ever did it again, but I think that was mostly frustration from losing me as her speedwork/training partner talking…maybe.

After a depressing week of hobbling a around like troll, I started to think practically about my race.  “If I followed the Doc’s rehab advice and had a quick recovery I could be back running…maybe…2 weeks out from Race Day?  Maybe I could adjust my registration from the 50km to the 25km race?  I can finish 25km off the couch, maybe not set a PR but still finish it without feeling like I’d been beaten with a 2×4…yes, that sounds like a plan, let’s do it!”  Things were looking up, “I might be able to salvage something out of this mess after all” I told myself…that was until I read this:

No More Requests, Please

Dear Runners & Walkers:

Well, it finally happened. We are swamped with requests for race changes and more people wanting to get into the race long after the registration closing. Due to the implementing of the immense planning effort and logistic timeline needs we are unable to take any further event change requests.

    I now know a blogger friend who is running partners with a doctor. Guess who I’m sending pictures to when I get my next rash!!

    Seriously man, that is a tough break. Hopefully your doc was super conservative and you’ll be good as new in no time.
